About Me:

James H. Miller earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1979 from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, his M.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1981 from Stanford University, and his Doctor of Science in Oceanographic Engineering in 1987 from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.  He was on the faculty of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California from 1987 through 1995.  Since 1995 he has been on the faculty of the Department of Ocean Engineering at the University of Rhode Island (URI) where he holds the rank of Professor. Dr. Miller served as Department Chair for 2008-2011. He also holds a joint appointment in the Graduate School of Oceanography. From 2011 to 2013, he served as Deputy Chief Scientist of the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation in La Spezia, Italy. Dr. Miller conducts research in the fields of underwater acoustics including the effects of bottom properties on acoustic propagation, acoustical oceanography, and marine bioacoustics. He has done work on the acoustic effects of ocean-based renewable energy systems on the marine environment. In addition to 60 refereed publications, he has more than 130 other publications. Dr. Miller has been Principal Investigator on 30 extramural research projects totaling more than $5M. He has four patents and has served as an expert witness. Dr. Miller is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) and was President of ASA for 2013-2014. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Rhode Island.
