Abstract
In order to provide a better understanding of these complex issues, we felt it was essential to demonstrate how the wind energy sector has, since its inception, brought together an ecosystem of diverse and committed stakeholders focused on biodiversity protection issues. The wind energy sector is indeed fully aware of its strengths and its impacts, and, although this is unfortunately still little known, offers numerous solutions to limit them.
This booklet has 3 sections:
- Taking biodiversity into account in wind power projects: link between climate crisis and biodiversity preservation, solar development objectives, project progress, principle of the ERCA sequence (Avoid, Reduce, Understand), impact of renewable energies on biodiversity
- A focus on important themes, including: an overview of priority scientific studies, financial and human investment in the sector, good practices in protected areas, restrictions for birds and bats, repowering, etc.
- Feedback from renewable energy developers promoting good practices: avoiding risk areas, partnership with an NGO, revegetation operations on degraded sites, examples of successful E/R/C measures, etc.
You will also find various interviews with experts (the French Office for Biodiversity, the LPO, CNRS, etc.) and a large central illustration containing the main information. The format is similar to the recent work of ADEME and IUCN: two popularization booklets accessible to the general public and elected officials, which address without taboos or exaggeration the impacts and solutions implemented throughout the projects and which help to promote good practices for a demanding and proportionate consideration of environmental issues in wind projects.
