The first Australasian Wind and Wildlife Conference was held in Melbourne on 9 October 2012, and brought together expertise from Australia and New Zealand. The conference followed on from similar ones held in the USA and Europe. In 2010, over 300 delegates attended the USA’s eighth bi-annual conference on wind and wildlife. In 2011, the first international conference on wind and wildlife was held in Trondheim, Norway, to an audience of similar numbers. The Australian conference had a number of purposes, including to:
- Bring together researchers, industry, consultants, regulators and non-government organisations to share the results of studies into wind farm and wildlife investigations in Australia and New Zealand
- Facilitate communication between the above groups and provide an opportunity for information sharing and networking
- Showcase current research and management in the field of wind farms and wildlife in Australia and New Zealand
- Develop consistencies in research and management
- Highlight areas in need of more investigation
