Abstract
Between April and August 2009, an extensive monitoring programme was carried out at alpha ventus to determine and quantify the underwater noise produced by the installation of the wind turbine foundations (jackets and tripods). The sound measurements took place between April and August 2009. Most recordings were made with autonomous systems. Measurement distances were between 800 and 2,400 m, and at about 16 km distance from alpha ventus within the Borkum Reef Ground SCI. During the installation of a tripod, a prototype noise mitigation (Small Bubble Curtain) system was tested and evaluated. Measurements of operational noise were made in May and June 2011. This was the first operating noise measurement on wind turbines in the 5 MW class; until then, only smaller turbines had been evaluated.
