Abstract
These good practice guidelines are based on information gathered and compiled from North America and Europe, with input from South African scientists and specialists. The guidelines present a summary of evidence relating to the known threats to bats from wind turbines, the international and national law and legislation that underpins the need to assess the impact of wind energy facilities on bats and the important ecosystem services bats provide in the South African context. Guidance is provided on preparing, planning and implementing bat preconstruction monitoring with respect to wind energy facility developments, survey techniques and interpreting results. Although not dealt with in detail, this document also includes some information on the need for the consideration of cumulative impacts, and post-construction monitoring. It is important to note that this document provides guidance and that each assessment should consider the scale of the likely impacts and take a proportionate approach.
