Dalian Ocean University
Dalian Ocean University is a multidisciplinary institution of higher education in northern China uniquely featuring the academic disciplines of oceanography and fisheries while emphasizing coordinated development of other subjects such as agriculture, engineering, science, management, literature, law, economics, and arts. The university's history can be traced back to 1952, formerly Northeast Fisheries Technical School, upgraded and renamed Dalian Fisheries Technical College in 1958, and then Dalian Fisheries University in 1978. In 2000, it came under the administration of Liaoning Province from the Ministry of Agriculture. In 2010, it was renamed Dalian Ocean University with the approval of the Ministry of Education.
Located in the beautiful coastal city of Dalian, the University consists of three campuses, namely, the Huanghai Campus, Bohai Campus, and Wafangdian Campus, covering an area of 740,000 square meters, possessing a sea area of 670,000 square meters for teaching and scientific research, and a total floor area of 400,000 square meters. The university now has 15 faculties and one teaching department of 1,200 teaching staff and more than 15,000 full-time students, 13 first-level discipline master’s degree programs, and 47 secondary discipline master’s degree programs, in addition to 12 professional master’s degree programs in the subject areas of agriculture, law, translation, civil engineering hydraulics, machinery and electronic information, and 46 undergraduate programs. In 2017, the university was rated among “Key Universities of Provincial First-rate University Construction”.
Soaked up in the dense educational atmosphere of “blue sea” science and research, the university is known for its motto of “to have a thorough knowledge of rivers and the sea, with equal stress on virtue and wisdom”, characterized by the core culture of “ocean-like inclusiveness, in pursuit of excellence”. The teaching style of “moral good and erudition, being a model for others” advocated by the university is impressive, and the learning style of “commitment to morality and learning, entertaining high aspiration” is constantly promoted. The elaborately designed cultural program “Blue Forum”, the “Chorus of the Sound of the Ocean” and other student associations of sports, science, and technology, as well as the Campus Culture Festival, held at regular intervals enrich the extracurricular science and cultural activities, improving the comprehensive quality of the students.
