The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Defenders of Wildlife hosted a free, nine-part webinar series, Wildlife & Wind Energy Webinar Series: Considerations for Monitoring and Managing Impacts, between August and November 2020. All webinars were recorded and are available on Tethys.
Webinar #5: Eagles: Permitting process and best practices for monitoring and mitigation
Bald and golden eagles are federally protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, whereby take of an eagle is a violation of the Act unless the appropriate permits have been obtained. Impacts to eagles from wind energy has led to the development of practices to monitor and mitigate through the permitting process and into full scale operation of a wind energy facility. This webinar reviewed relevant permitting processes and guidance for conserving eagles as documented in the Wind Energy Guidelines and Module 1 of the Eagle Conservation Plan Guidance. Attendees learned about pre- and post-construction data collection methods, best practices, and recent developments that may further refine our understanding of risk to eagles from wind energy.
