On behalf of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Wind Energy Technologies Office (WETO), and in collaboration with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) hosted a virtual workshop in December 2022 to gather feedback on noise reduction strategies for the installation of fixed-bottom offshore wind turbines to minimize the environmental effects of offshore wind development.
NREL and PNNL gathered industry representatives, subject matter experts, and government agencies to discuss the barriers to reduce noise associated with the installation of fixed-bottom offshore wind turbines, including the practicality of using alternative foundations and installation methods, the effectiveness of existing noise abatement technologies, and research and monitoring needs. The workshop did not cover noise reduction associated with associated vessels, geological and geophysical surveys, cable laying, or noise related to other phases of development (e.g., operational noise, decommissioning).
A public document summarizing the workshop and participants discussions will be made available on Tethys in early 2023.
Session 1 Presentations:
- Summary of Existing Foundations, Installation Methods, and Effects (Ralph Grismala, ICF)
- NOWRDC - Alternative Foundations and Installation Methods (Monica Maher, DOE)
