Webinar #5 in Annex IV Environmental Webinar Series
Sponsored by Ocean Energy Systems (OES)
May 7, 2015 @ 16:00 - 17:30 UTC
Summary
As electricity is generated at sea by marine renewable energy technologies, it must be transported back to shore through undersea cables. As electricity is transmitted through the cables, Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) are produced. While the earth has a natural EMF signature, additional EMF signals may have effects on certain marine animals such as fish and sea turtles. This webinar provides an overview of EMF in the marine environment, how additional EMF signatures from marine renewable energy devices may effect certain marine organisms, and how research efforts are addressing this issue.
Speaker Presentation Materials
- EMF in the Marine Environment and its Effects on Marine Organisms (Andrew Gill, Cranfield University, UK)
- Filling Data Gaps on EMF and Marine Organisms (Ann Bull, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, US)
