On behalf of the organizing committee for XSEDE14, we are pleased to welcome you to the third annual gathering of the extended community of individuals interested in advancing research cyberinfrastructure and integrated digital services for the benefit of science and society.
This year, we are showcasing the discoveries, innovations, challenges and achievements of those who utilize and support XSEDE resources and services, as well as other digital resources and services throughout the world. The theme of XSEDE14 is "Engaging Communities," to engage both traditional users of digital resources and people who have not traditionally used digital resources but would benefit from their usage.
The impressive plenary speakers reflect the conference themes:
- Phil Isenberg of the Delta Stewardship Council and Peter Goodwin of the Delta Science Program in California will describe what really happens when scientists engage with policy-‐ makers to help solve big, complicated social problems, using the real-‐world example of a proposed $25 billion water and ecosystem restoration project in California.
- Farnam Jahanian, NSF Assistant Director for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE), will focus on the technological advances and emerging trends that are shaping our future and accelerating the pace of discovery and innovation across all science and engineering disciplines. He will also describe how these trends inform priorities and programs at the National Science Foundation.
- Tom Lange, Procter & Gamble, will discuss the increasing importance of computational modeling in industry, as well as the need for engaging a well-‐trained science and engineering workforce. Mr. Lange will present examples of how P&G uses modeling and simulation to enhance product development and company competitiveness and will illustrate the workforce skills that are required to carry out those tasks.
- Carlos Castillo-‐Chavez from Arizona State University will discuss success stories from the Mathematical and Theoretical Biology Institute (MTBI). Over nearly two decades, the MTBI has mentored more than 400 undergraduates at Cornell University, the University of Iowa, and Arizona State. The MTBI works to engage underrepresented communities and to overcome the hurdles faced by students who start from less privileged backgrounds.
- Vetria Byrd from Clemson University will talk about the significant role that visualization plays in the exploration and understanding of data across all disciplines. Dr. Byrd will describe her efforts to diversify a field with such far reaching interdisciplinary influences and the challenges and opportunities faced by women and underrepresented groups in visualization.
