This page is meant to define the scope of technologies that are included in the Wind Energy Monitoring and Mitigation Technologies Tool, and provide detailed definitions for the fields.
Scope:
- Includes technologies with the primary purpose of monitoring and/or mitigating wildlife interactions with wind energy
- Includes technologies which have performed or plan to perform a laboratory or field validation study
- Includes offshore and land-based wind
- Includes international technology
- Includes instrumentation and software
- Includes technology that is freely available, available for purchase, or in-development
- Includes technologies from analogous industries (e.g., offshore oil and gas, marine energy) as long as the monitoring/mitigation function is similar

Categories describing the level of testing that has been conducted A brief summary of the most recent technical evaluations your technology has undergone, including a publication, study receptor, approach, location, and dates. |

Hierarchy | Definition |

Monitoring | Methods and technologies used to observe ecosystem processes, habitat changes, behavior, activity, or abundance, and to assess potential environmental impacts resulting from a project. |
Mitigation | A process by which projects implement measures to avoid, minimize, and compensate the adverse effects of environmental impacts resulting from a project. Depending on the regulatory authority, mitigation may also refer to measures that reduce, rectify, rehabilitate, or offset impacts. |

Pilot Field Study | Early-stage study focused on the performance of the technology and initial effectiveness relative to the species of interest. May be performed at a wind farm or in a natural setting where the species of interest may be present |
Small-scale Field Study | Mid-stage study focused on the performance of the technology, initial integration of the technology with the wind turbine or wind farm infrastructure, and effectiveness relative to the species of interest. Conducted at a wind farm, but with a small sample size. |
Large-scale Field Study | Late-stage study focused on the performance of the technology, integration of the technology with the wind turbine or wind farm infrastructure, and effectiveness relative to the species of interest.. Conducted at one or more wind farms with a large sample size |
