Abstract
This chapter investigates the application of Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) to water use, management and planning, through consideration of published reviews, case studies and SEA reports. Eight case studies are considered in major water environment-related sectors, including amongst others marine renewable energy, hydropower, fisheries and flood management. The case studies provide an introduction to the diverse use of SEA in the wider water sector. The water environment is intrinsically linked to key global environmental challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss and ecosystem services. Therefore, how these issues are taken account within SEA is also briefly considered.
