Abstract
This paper is of interest to experts in the fields of marine renewable energy, aquaculture, and marine ecology as well as the general public.
In this paper, the authors present results of an experimental study designed to evaluate the susceptibility and selectivity of commonly used materials in the maritime industry to colonization and biomass accumulation of encrusting subtidal species. Specifically, they assess whether biofouling composition, main species, and biomass accumulation rates are different among three materials (aluminum, high-density polyethylene, and steel) at two different depths (5 m and 15 m) in central Chile.
