Description
A MW-level wave energy demonstration project will be built in Wanshan island, Zhuhai city, and a number of wave energy units will be manufactured, installed, and tested to realize the demonstration operation of grid connection. At the same time, the test system construction of wave energy converters will be carried out, and supporting engineering facilities such as cable laying and power system construction will be completed. Carry out relevant equipment test work; Carry out the construction of environmental monitoring, data service system, operation, and maintenance guarantee system, and other supporting facilities, to provide testing services for domestic and foreign wave energy generating sets.
Location
The device is located in Wanshan Island, Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, China (21.92616°N, 113.7195°E).
Licensing Information
GIEC obtained the permit for the project sea area in Wanshan island from local government departments (People's Government of Guangdong Province) On October 20, 2020. The environmental impact assessment shall be approved by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. Offshore construction shall obtain the water and underwater construction permit of Zhuhai Maritime Safety Administration.
Project Progress
In 2017, the project was approved and initiated.
In 2020, the construction of the first wave energy converter(WEC) has been completed and real sea test has been carried out.
In 2021, the construction of the second WEC has been completed and real sea test is being carried out.
Key Environmental Issues
The project will generate more than 1 million kWh of electricity per year and is expected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 600 tons. No environmental effects were measured from baseline testing.
