Key Environmental Issues
EWP’s floaters do not connect to the ocean floor, and do not create any new presence in the ocean. EWP only connects its floaters to existent man-made structures. There is no underwater mooring or underwater electric cables. In addition, the Eco Wave Power technology uses biodegradable hydraulic fluid.
An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) named Particular-Modality Project Eco Wave MANZANILLO I was undertaken for the planned project by the Study and Conservation of Nature A.C. (Estudio y Conservación de la Naturaleza A.C. (ECONATURA)) organization by PhD. Jorge Luis Hernández Aguilera.
The main conclusions of the Environmental Impact Assessment were as follows:
- Eco Wave Power’s planned wave energy power station in Manzanillo will reduce local greenhouse gas emissions, and therefore, will be beneficial to the surrounding environment.
- The power station will not damage the local marine dunes used for the prevention of Tsunamis in Mexico.
- The power station will not harm the local sea turtle population which lay their eggs on Manzanillo’s shores.
- The power station will not damage the local marine fauna in Manzanillo.
- The power station will not damage various species of marine life, which are usually found at a depth of around 40 meters, while the power station will be located at a depth of 5-8 meters.
- The power station will not use any kind of fuels, so there is no risk of a fuel spill, or air pollution resulting from fuel combustion.
- The power station does not produce any waste which will be dumped in the ocean or produce any type of debris which may be dangerous to the surrounding environment.
- The power station will promote the preservation of the various varieties of the fish, since the project serves as an artificial reef, which will be incorporated into the life of local marine animals.
