The profile of the institute, is marked by a focus formation in the field of comparative, organismic zoology, particularly the system-oriented neurobiology.
Particularly well represented is the behavioral neurobiology. Here are predominantly sensory-physiological (active and passive electric sensor and hydrodynamics sensors in fish; infrared sensor in snakes and insects pyrophilen) and sensory-motor problems (rhythmic movements in invertebrates, compensatory swimming movements in fish) processed.
Further researches relate the cognitive research (object recognition, spatial orientation) a with. The combination of comparative physiology of the senses and sensory ecology is a special characteristic of Zoology in Bonn, which occupies an exceptional position with this focus. This focus is complemented by a neuroanatomically working department whose focus is the functional morphology of the central nervous system.
In the systemic nature of the Institute also issues of evolutionary biology and biodiversity research are included. Ongoing sensory-physiological studies have several applied research projects conducted recently (bionics). At the Institute technical Sensorysteme in the field of hydrodynamics sensor, the electric sensor and the infrared sensor will be developed in each of which the principles of information collection and in animals in the technology transfer.
Due to the variety of research topics, the Institute offers a wide range of courses in organismic zoology, physiology, neurobiology and bionics bachelor's degree in biology and in various master's degree programs.
