OES-Environmental & ORJIP International Forum #3: Updates on Monitoring and Research Around Wave Energy Devices

OES-Environmental and ORJIP Ocean Energy invite you to join the first International Forum on MRE Environmental R&D that will present and review the latest in research and monitoring around marine renewable energy (MRE) sites. This forum consists of three different webinars, each running from 8am – 10am PT (3pm – 5pm UTC) on April 21, 22, and 23, 2020. The purpose of the forum is to share the most recent environmental research and monitoring results with a broad audience. The primary audiences we hope to reach will include regulators, MRE device and project developers, and other researchers. Each webinar will showcase four to five experts.

The first webinar, Update on Monitoring and Research Around Turbines, will be held 21 April; the second webinar, Design and Application of Integrated Monitoring Platforms for Monitoring Around MRE Devices, will be held 22 April; and the third webinar, Updates on Monitoring and Research Around Wave Devices, will be held 23 April.

  • Background on wave energy research and monitoring - Jennifer Fox and Kate Smith, Aquatera Ltd. & Andrea Copping, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
  • SEA Wave - Matthew Witt, University of Exeter 
    • Matthew Witt is an Associate Professor at the University of Exeter; he is a marine scientist and conservation biologist. His research focuses on animal habitat-use and human-wildlife overlap, including fisheries, offshore energy extraction and the role of protected areas. He uses a variety of technologies to help this research, including satellite tracking and remote deployable video systems. His research relies upon spatial ecology and data visualisation to improve our capacity to manage human activities at sea. He has worked on a range of highly migratory marine species in the Atlantic Ocean, including basking sharks, leatherback turtles and the Atlantic bluefin tuna.

  • WESE - Juan Bald, AZTI-Tecnalia & Teresa Simas, WavEC - Offshore Renewables 
    • Dr. Juan Bald (male). PhD in Biology by the University of Navarra and Maîtrise de Sciences de l'Environnement, Section Océanologie by the University of Bordeaux (France). He works at AZTI since 1999, since 2010 as Principal Researcher and since 2016 he is Coordinator of the Environmental Management Area of Seas and Coasts of AZTI. He is specialist in the management of shellfish resources, indicators of the physical-chemical state of estuary and coastal waters in relation to the Water Framework Directive and the development of environmental impact studies. He has worked on various impact studies caused by culture cages, marinas, dredging and recently in relation to marine renewable energy projects (waves and wind) in the framework of projects financed at national and European level (it should be noted that he is general coordinator of the Wave Energy in the Southern Europe project, WESE, http://www.wese-project.eu/). He participates or has participated in teaching activities in several Postgraduate Masters at the University of the Basque Country, the University of Navarra and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. Since 2018 he is an associate professor in the Department of Environmental Biology of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Navarra, teaching the subject of Organization and Project Management in the Degree of Environmental Sciences. He is a member of Annex IV of the International Energy Agency and of the Working Group on Marine Renewable Energy (WGMRE) of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). As a result of the participation in all these projects, 25 articles have been published in indexed journals (index h = 19; with 1,272 citations, https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Juan_Bald; https://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.uri?authorId=12765288600).
    • Teresa Simas started her career in 1996 as an associate researcher at the New University of Lisbon, where she completed her MSc and PhD on Marine Ecology and Environmental Engineering. She went on to work as a consultant on the implementation of the Water Framework Directive in Portugal and on marine project EIAs. She joined WavEC in 2008 as head of department and has been involved in several R&D projects and services on marine technology environmental assessment. She lectures on ocean habitats and EIA for the European Masters in Renewable Energy (EUREC) at IST University of Lisbon.

  • Lysekil - Anke Bender, Uppsala University
    • Anke Bender is a PhD candidate at Uppsala University in Sweden. Her project is part of the Lysekil Wave Power Project. The wave energy research group at Uppsala University test full-scale devices and technology solutions at a research test site outside the town Lysekil at the west coast of Sweden. Since 2016, she is working with environmental effects from wave power with the focus on mobile mega fauna. For that purpose long-term field studies are conducted and evaluated.
